Iceland vs Denmark Prediction & Betting tips
In the Laugadalsvöllur in Reykjavik there is a Scandinavian get-together on Sunday evening between two teams that are still looking for their first victory. In group A with Belgium and England, this seems to be the only match in which a three-pointer can really be achieved. Who can do this?
Iceland:
Iceland impressed a European championship years ago, but the number 41 of the FIFA world ranking has not yet been placed for the upcoming European Championship. In the European Championship qualification, Erik Hamrén’s team ended up in a group with France, Turkey, Albania, Andorra and Moldova. The Icelanders finished in third place, so they had to participate in the playoffs on Thursday, October 8 – and were allowed to continue – on Thursday, November 12. First, however, it was time to kick off the Nations Leage in Group A.
Gareth Southgate’s England struggled with the Icelanders in the opening game. Especially when with a 0-0 score, right back Kyle Walker also had to leave the field with red. There was danger from both sides, but in the final stages defender Sverrir Ingi Ingason of PAOK made hands, meaning the referee pointed to the spot. Raheem Sterling used the penalty and Iceland fell unhappily. In the match against Belgium, Hamrén switched from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and that didn’t work out very happily. Via Brescia striker Hólmbert Aron Fridjónsson, his team took the lead, but every time De Rode Duivelseven started chances were created. Belgium beat Iceland 5-1 in the Roi Baudouin Stadium.
Last week, Iceland had to take action for the last European Championship tickets. Romania was the opponent and it was not long before the first goals were scored in the Laugardalsvöllur. After fifteen minutes, Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the opening goal and fifteen minutes later the Everton midfielder doubled the lead. Ex-Eredivisionist Alfred Finnbogason also scored, but to his surprise the linesman raised his flag. Romania scored in the second half via a utilized penalty kick from Alexandru Maxim. It was getting exciting, but Iceland was not really in danger. At the beginning of November, Hungary is the only country that stands between Iceland and a European Championship ticket.
Denmark:
Denmark had three points less in the European Championship qualifying series than Iceland, but the Danes were still qualified for the final tournament without any problems. In a group with Switzerland, Ireland, Georgia and Gibraltar it came second in the group despite four draws. Thanks to the previous edition of the Nations League and this European Championship qualification, Kasper Hjulmand’s team had built up a series of fourteen matches without a defeat. A great achievement for the number sixteen of the FIFA world rankings.
Yet this series soon came to an end when a new edition of the Nations League began. In the opening match, the Danes received an equal visit from – number 1 in the world – Belgium. In football terms, the Scandinavian country received a lot of praise, but this was not reflected in the score. Belgium beat Denmark 0-2 thanks to goals from Jason Denayer and Dries Mertens. The Danish team performed better against the English. England was obviously the favorite, but Christian Eriksen’s team created the most opportunities. Especially in the air, the Danes ruled the Southgate side and the game ended scoreless. If Denmark wins against Iceland, they can get four points in the Nations League. If England does not win against Belgium on Sunday, there are still real chances of second place in the difficult group.
