AS Roma vs Ajax Prediction & Betting tips
Last week Ajax did themselves a lot short in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Europa League against AS Roma. The team from Amsterdam faces the task of making up for a 1-2 defeat on Thursday evening in the Italian capital.
Roma:
So AS Roma did very good business last week. And that while the Romans did not play a strong match at all, visiting the Johan Cruijff Arena. Normally Roma is an offensive team to be reckoned with, but I Giallorossi rarely came close to the Ajax goal. Despite this, there were scored twice. As goalkeeper Pau Lopez had some good saves in the house, there was a 1-2 victory on the scoreboard after ninety minutes.
In Serie A, the goal for Roma is still to finish in the top four in order to gain access to the lucrative billion-dollar Champions League. That will not be easy, but in that respect Roma did what it was supposed to do on Sunday. The home game against Bologna was won 1-0, although, just like three days earlier in Amsterdam, things were going well. Trainer Paulo Fonseca chose to save a few players for the return. They normally return to the starting eleven on Thursday. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also fit again, although it is doubtful whether he can handle a whole match. A role as a substitute is the most obvious for the Armenian on Thursday.
Ajax:
Just like Ajax’s previous match in the Europa League in this calendar year, things went smoothly in the first match against AS Roma for a long time. With a 1-0 lead, Dusan Tadic missed a penalty kick, after which goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen made an error shortly afterwards, causing the 1-1. Ajax then went in search of a new lead with great urge. Despite some dangerous moments, it just didn’t happen. In fact, the Italians still scored the winning 1-2.
The Amsterdammers therefore have to work hard on Thursday. Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag’s team will not consider itself without a chance, given the strengths from the first game. A windfall is that Maarten Stekelenburg will be available again. His replacement Scherpen did keep a clean sheet, however, in the league game won on Sunday, visiting RKC Waalwijk (0-1). The game was one to forget quickly. Sebastien Haller did provide the only goal in that game in a nice way, but for the well-known reason he disappears from the base again before Thursday’s game.
