Ajax vs Liverpool Prediction & Betting tips
Of course, Ajax hopes to achieve high marks in the Champions League again this season. The team from Amsterdam can start right away on Wednesday evening, because none other than Liverpool comes to visit the Johan Cruijff Arena. However, the English are plagued by an injury wave.
Ajax:
Football-loving Europe has been hanging on Ajax’s lips again in recent years. It all started, of course, with that lost Europa League final against Manchester United in 2017. Two years later, the team from Amsterdam was next to a final place in the Champions League after the drama against Tottenham Hotspur. Last year, Erik ten Hag’s team again provided spectacle (think for example of the insane 4-4 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge), but did not manage to overwinter it in the European champion ball.
So Ajax counts completely again, but of course it has the bad luck that it sees its best players leave every year. Following Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong, this summer it was the turn of Donny van de Beek and Hakim Ziyech to seek refuge with a larger club in a larger league. With Mohammed Kudus and Antony, the Amsterdammers have once again brought in some potential gems, but of course they are not yet at the level of their predecessors. In the Dutch Eredivisie Ajax usually waltzes over its opponents, such as last weekend in the 5-1 victory over a powerless Heerenveen. However, this is the first serious test for the Ajax players, in which Ten Hag will probably fall back on the system with Dusan Tadic in the point of the attack. However, I am especially concerned about the Amsterdam rearguard, as I doubt Perr Schuurs and especially Daley Blind will be able to keep the fast Liverpool vanguard in check.
Liverpool:
Liverpool has had an insane and sensational start to the season. Jürgen Klopp’s team scores continuously, but also regularly keeps an open house in the back. Barely two and a half weeks ago, the English national champion was beaten by no less than 7-2 (!) At Aston Villa, after previously winning 4-3 and 3-1 against Leeds United and Arsenal respectively.
Last weekend’s Merseyside Derby against fellow townsman Everton also yielded many goals with a 2-2 draw. Afterwards, however, it was only about the injured outbreak of Virgil van Dijk, who will be sidelined for months and may even have to miss the European Championship. The English rearguard was severely damaged on Wednesday evening anyway, because in addition to Van Dijk, Joel Matip and first goalkeeper Alisson Becker will probably also be absent. In midfield, Klopp is unlikely to have access to Nabi Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Thiago Alcantara.
Liverpool is struggling with a laundry list of absentees, but it is certainly not all doom and gloom at Anfield Road. Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Mohammed Salah are in top form, while Gini Wijnaldum, Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota got a rest last weekend and are therefore in top shape. So the English still have plenty of quality.
