Belarus vs Hungary Prediction & Betting tips
Wednesday evening, the most spectacular exhibition game is not played when Belarus and Hungary compete against each other.
Belarus:
Belarus has never been able to qualify for a final tournament since the independence of the Soviet Union. In the last qualifying pool, the men of Igor Kriushenko in a group with the Dutch team finished in the last place, still under Luxembourg.
The only game won was the home game against Bulgaria. Yet Belarus has been anything but cannon fodder for the other countries in the group. In Minsk, France was held 0-0, while the French also had some trouble in the home match and only managed to win 2-1. Sweden won twice comfortably with 4-0, but Orange also managed to escape point loss.
In October last year, the encounter in Minsk seemed to be heading for a 1-1 tie, until Arjen Robben, in his penultimate international match, used a penalty. In the final phase, Memphis brought the margin to two.
The Belarusian selection for the exhibition games against Hungary and Finland does not contain any name that will ring a bell with the average football fan. The vast majority is active in the own league. A few people earn their living in the Kazakh competition or in low flyers in Russia.
The biggest names have not even been called. These include players like Nikita Kurzun (Dynamo Kiev), Renan Bressan (Chaves) and Alyaksandr Martynovich (Krasnodar).
Hungary:
The heyday of Hungarian football has been behind us for decades. The Hungarians are ranked 49th in the FIFA rankings and have not been active on a global final round since 1986. Hungary’s participation in the European Championship in France in 2016 was the first since 1972.
That Hungary can at best be called a middle-driver in European football is also not surprising given the player material that national coach Geores Leekens has at his disposal. The lion’s share of the selection is active in its own Hungarian league, a competition that is so weak that it did not even supply a team in the second qualifying round of the Europa League.
The internationals of any format all play abroad. The eye-catchers that have a basic place in a renowned competition are goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi (RB Leipzig), Tamás Kádár (Dynamo Kyiv), Ádám Nagy (Bologna), Ádám Szalai (Hoffenheim) and good-old Balázs Dzsudzsak, who are now active at Al-Wahda from the United Arab Emirates.
There are currently no Hungarian talents on the verge of their breakthrough, so it may take a while before we see the Hungarians again at a final tournament.
