Burnley vs Southampton Prediction & Betting tips
Burnley and Southampton both fought long-term against relegation in the Premier League. Burnley eventually finished six points above the finish line and Southampton five. This season, The Clarets and The Saints hope to have a harder time in the competition.
Burnley:
After the seventh place of two seasons ago, Burnley suddenly fought against relegation in the Premier League last season. It was certainly not the case that Burnley was suddenly bought out by other clubs after the successful season of two years ago. In fact, last season Sean Dyche had almost the same selection as the season before. The difference: last season, clubs focused on Burnley’s conservative style of play, which means that The Clarets were still under six lines before the end. Due to a great final sprint, Burnley managed to maintain itself last season.
Just like during the previous summer transfer period, Burnley was able to keep the selection fairly intact. There was not much interest for the Burnley players either, because almost all of them fell through the ice last season. With Tom Heaton (Aston Villa), the first goalkeeper of last season has left for a competitor, but with Nick Pope and Joe Hart, The Clarets still have two excellent keepers. Stopping Peter Crouch is also worth mentioning, although in the past six months he had already shown that he was ready for his football pension on a rental basis at Burnley. Striker Jay Rodríguez has returned to Burnley’s old nest after seven years, while The Clarets and Erik Pieters have also added a solid left back to the selection.
Southampton:
Since Ronald Koeman’s departure from Southampton in 2016, the club has not really improved. The current national coach of the Dutch national team did not want to extend his contract for a long time at Southampton, while Southampton did demand this from the coach and then went to Everton. At Southampton, they still regret not keeping Koeman inboard, as The Saints finished seventeenth and sixteenth in the Premier League in the last two years. In both seasons, Southampton only played safely in the final weeks of the season, while The Saints qualified for European football under Koeman.
Current Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhüttl signed a contract at St. Mary’s Stadium last December and had to protect Southampton from relegation. He succeeded. The question is, however, whether the results were so much better under the Austrian than under his predecessor Mark Hughes. At Southampton they at least expect 51-year-old Hasenhüttl to do well with The Saints this season. With Che Adams (Birmingham City) and Moussa Djenepo (Standard Liège), Southampton has managed to tie two talents to the club, while Danny Ings also came over from Liverpool this summer. So it does not seem that Southampton has weakened this transfer period, although we cannot expect any miracles from The Saints this season either. The first objective, after all, remains enforcement at St. Mary’s Stadium.
