Burnley vs Southampton Prediction & Betting tips
Burnley and Southampton are still winless in the Premier League. On Saturday evening, these two teams will meet at Turf Moor and go on the hunt for their first points of the season. More than a year ago Burnley won 3-0 against Southampton at home, but the balance of power seems to be closer this weekend.
Burnley:
Burnley is one of the few teams to have only completed one league match. The team of Sean Dyche played in the first league game at Leicester City last weekend. The game was lost 4-2 to Burnley and therefore The Clarets are still on zero points in the Premier League. The defeat at Leicester is no cause for panic at Burnley, as The Clarets simply did not have luck on their side at King Power Stadium.
At Burnley they already played two other games, namely in the Carabao Cup. A week and a half ago Burnley defeated competitor Sheffield United in the cup tournament (1-1, win after penalties) and earlier this week The Clarets in London were 0-2 too strong for Millwall. At the end of the first half, Josh Brownhill managed to put Burnley ahead of The Den with a good long shot. Matej Vydra scored the second goal for Burnley in the final stages of the game, which has been unbeaten against Southampton for seven home games in a row.
Southampton:
The Southampton players do not have the best memories of their last trips to Turf Moor. The last time Southampton won a visit to Burnley was thirteen years ago, although both clubs did not always meet in the intervening period. It is up to the current Southampton selection to book another victory on Saturday evening for the first time since 2007 when visiting Burnley. Should that happen, it would immediately be Southampton’s first win this season. Ralph Hasenhüttl and his men have completed three official matches in the current football season so far. Southampton started the Premier League two weeks ago with a somewhat unjustified 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace and lost 0-2 against Brentford a few days later in the Carabao Cup.
Last Sunday, Southampton took on Tottenham Hotspur at Mary’s Stadium. Hasenhüttl’s team played a reasonable game against the Spurs, but ultimately lost no less than 2-5. The reason for such a significant defeat? At one point Southampton had absolutely no grip on the duo Heung-Min Son / Harry Kane and therefore the score turned out rather flattering. However, Hasenhüttl also indicated afterwards that his team was not defending too well and there was also a grain of truth in that. A 2-5 defeat only suggests that Southampton was completely outplayed by Tottenham, but that was absolutely not the case. Moreover, they are also used to something at Southampton: a year ago Southampton lost 0-9 (!) To Leicester City on an October Friday evening.
