Gent vs FK Crvena zvezda Prediction & Betting tips
Gent has their backs to the wall in Group L of the Europa League. With three defeats in the first three games, Wim De Decker’s team got off to a bad start in the competition. With already six points behind second place, currently occupied by the guests from Belgrade, the gate to the second round could close early with another defeat.
In the run-up to the match between Ghent and Red Star Belgrade, the odds slightly deflect towards the home side, as the betting base odds comparison shows.
However, this evaluation does not seem really well founded. After all, things are not only catastrophic internationally for Ghent, but also at the national level, the second of the preseason currently has little to smile about. With seven defeats from the 13 league games, Gent is only tenth in the Jupiler League. Belgrade, on the other hand, is still unbeaten in Serbia and scored 41 out of a possible 45 points.
But because the draw would help the Serbs a lot, we think it is more sustainable to give Gent against Red Star Belgrade the tip on a rather low-goal game. A maximum of two goals seem very consistent.
Gent:
Recently things went pretty well for the Koninklijke Atletiek Associatie Gent. The club, which was founded in 1864 and which has a Sioux chief in the club logo in reference to Buffalo Bill, who was visiting Ghent at the turn of the century, celebrated its first and only Belgian championship in 2015.
In addition, there was a good run through the Europa League just last season. Gent made it to the sixteenth finals and only narrowly failed at AS Roma. In the Jupiler League, when the season ended, the runner-up was also recorded.
The Buffalos were even allowed to qualify for the Champions League. After defeating Rapid Vienna there were two clear defeats in the playoffs against Dynamo Kiev, with which the Belgians had to make do with the Europa League.
While the Buffalos in the group with Hoffenheim, Belgrade and Liberec were considered to be contenders for the leap into the intermediate round, this goal is very far after three defeats from three games. Wim De Decker’s team now absolutely needs a perfect second half.
The current failure at both international and national level comes as a surprise. At home, Gent remained undefeated in 13 European home games in a row before the defeats against Kiev and Hoffenheim (eight wins, five draws), before the worm is currently completely in there.
At least the Buffalos managed the dress rehearsal on Sunday. With a 1-0 away win at Charleroi, the Decker-Elf reported back. In view of the large backlog in the Jupiler League, however, we do not think it ruled out that too much effort will no longer be made in favor of the league in the Europa League. This eventuality should also be taken into account in the tip for Gent against Red Star Belgrade.
Red Star Belgrade:
FK Red Star Belgrade is definitely a house number in European football. The club, also known as Crvena zvezda, holds first place in the all-time table of the former Yugoslav league and once won the European Cup in 1991 – the previous competition of the Champions League.
In Serbia, too, the Crveno-beli (in German: the red-whites) are the absolute measure of all things. In the summer, they celebrated their third Serbian championship in a row, increasing their total number of national championships to 30.
Dejan Stankovic’s team would have loved to return to the Champions League for the 2020/21 season. However, the Serbs lost out on penalties in a knockout match against Omonia Nicosia.
So now it’s the second time after 2017/18 for Red Star Belgrade in the group stage of the Europa League. At the premiere, they were able to finish their preliminary round behind Arsenal FC in second place and move into the intermediate round. After six out of nine possible points, they are now back on the right track.
Just three weeks ago, the Crveno-beli also celebrated a 2-1 victory against today’s opponent Gent. The Serbs are currently six wins in a row across all competitions. It is all the more surprising that they come to Belgium as outsiders in the eyes of the betting providers.
