Lazio vs Rennes Prediction & Betting tips
In Group E of the Europa League, a match is scheduled on Thursday evening between the cup winners of two major European football countries, who lost both points in the first round of play. CRF Cluj is now at the top of the group, while it was really expected that this would go between Celtic, Rennes and Lazio. The latter two meet in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Lazio:
After a moderate season in 2018/2019, Lazio finished eighth in the competition. Yet they still managed to make up for this with the profit of the Coppa Italia. It was the cup win, with which Lazio rewarded itself with a ticket to the Europa League. Expectations were high in the new season and in their 3-5-2 formation with players like Ciro Immobille and Joaquin Correa, Lazio would have to compete with clubs such as Roma, AC Milan and Atalanta. To date, that has been going well and every club seems to be struggling with the Romans. Genoa, Parma and Sampdoria were won and the arch rival AS Roma was held on a draw. We currently find Lazio in a reasonable sixth place.
Yet it immediately went wrong in the opening game of the new Europa League season. Everyone expected a simple victory for Lazio against Romanian CRF Cluj. When center defender Bastos set Lazio to 0-1 after half an hour, it seemed that Lazio was going to do the job. But that didn’t work. Cluj tied the score with a penalty and fifteen minutes before the end, Cluj decided the match. A huge damper for the Italians.
Stade Rennes:
Rennes also managed to reach the tournament through a cup win. In the past season they managed to win the Coupe de France and with that they also assured themselves of European football. It seems a somewhat premature participation, since their Ligue 1 performances are still relatively poor. Last season, Rennes finished only tenth and this season does not seem to go any better. After a big 9 to 3 kickstart against Montpellier, PSG and Strasbourg, Rennes was in third place at the end of August. Still, the five rounds were not won after that. Van Nice and Nantes were lost and it played a draw against Brest, Lille and Marseille. The team is now in eighth place, but Rennes has not got the right shape yet.
That was also evident in the Europa League match against Celtic. A great poster brought the teams no more than a point division. M’Baye Niang took care of a penalty and he used this penalty himself, but in the second half Celtic received a penalty and it was also used. Ryan Christie put the Scottish champion on the same level and after a boring and far from spectacular duel, the teams continued their Europa League season with just one point.
