Luxembourg vs Serbia Prediction & Betting tips
In its hunt for European Championship qualification, Serbia travels to Luxembourg City on Monday evening to take on Luxembourg at Stade Josy Barthel. The visitors are of course a favorite, but they should definitely not underestimate the homeland.
Luxembourg:
The national team of Luxembourg does not of course inspire much fear, but the mini state is no longer the typical football dwarf it once was. In fact, with four points from four rounds of play, the Red Lions in group B of the European Championship qualifying are just one point behind Portugal, and they are keeping Serbia behind on the basis of a better goal difference. In theory, Luxembourg is therefore still in the race for a starting ticket for next year’s European Championship, although of course that is not realistic.
Nonetheless, national coach Luc Holtz does an excellent job, as his Luxembourg is nowadays also able to withstand the larger football countries. In the European Championship qualification, Ukraine was twice narrowly lost with 1-2 and 1-0, while the country was allowed to add four points in its two duels against Lithuania. Last Friday evening, Luxembourg lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland in a friendly international match, which is still without a point loss in a pool with the Netherlands and Germany. It is clear that this Luxembourg is therefore not nearly as bad as it was ten or fifteen years ago. For example, think again of the scoreless draw of two years ago in and against France, with Telstar player Gerson Rodrigues scoring almost the winning goal with a shot on the post. Nowadays the attacker is under contract with Dynamo Kiev, where he had an excellent start with two goals in three games. Luxembourg is therefore making good progress and, with a 91st place on the FIFA world ranking, is no less than 104 places higher than thirteen years ago.
Serbia:
Serbia no longer has direct EC qualification in its own hands. Despite two assists from Ajax player Dusan Tadic, the Balkan country lost to their home crowd last Friday with 2-4 from Portugal. A disastrous defeat, because it saw both Portugal and Ukraine disappear from view. The Eagles must now win all remaining four European Championship qualifiers, and hope that Portugal and / or Ukraine are under pressure, even though they could also qualify for next year’s European Championship through the play-offs.
So for Serbia, the assignment is clear at the Stade Josy Barthel in Luxembourg City. There has to be won, no matter how. The goal difference is irrelevant, since in the event of a tie, the mutual result is decisive (and Luxembourg will most likely not be a direct competitor in the battle for direct EC qualification). The team of the new national coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic, who made his debut in the defeat against Portugal, will also not lose sight of her defensive duties. Serbia was unable to keep its goal clean for seven consecutive international matches – even small football countries such as Lithuania and Montenegro were able to score a goal.
