Marseille vs Lyon Prediction & Betting tips
Olympique Lyon are aiming for one of the three Champions League places in Ligue 1 this season and have been in a promising position for a long time. But in the last few weeks Lyonnais had to let go and lost a better starting position, which is now occupied by Olympique Marseille. This is exactly where Lyon have to go this Sunday (18.03., 9:00 pm) and should take at least one, ideally three points, out of the Stade Velodrome to be realistic chances for the premier class. The fact that the insecure team of head coach Bruno Génésio manages to win, however, is not believed in view of the current strength of Marseille. We therefore recommend a secured bet on draw no bet bets on the home leg of coach Rudi Garcia. These are offered by Bet365 at odds up to 1.50 and played by us with three units.
Marseille:
Olympique Marseille is currently in Ligue 1 with a record of 17 wins, eight draws and four defeats, a goal difference of 59:34 and 59 points in third place, which would qualify for participation in the Champions League (qualification). While the championship is most likely already given to Paris Saint Germain, with a gap of four points on AS Monaco a jump to second place is quite within the bounds of the possible. However, the team of coach Rudi Garcia will also have to keep an eye on Lyon, who are just five minutes behind to find fault. Therefore, Marseille could bring not only three more points between themselves and the – realistically – only remaining competitors for the third place with a victory in the upcoming game, but also make a big step towards the premier class.
The current form of Marseille conveys at best an average impression at first glance. For example, three defeats against Paris Saint Germain (Ligue 1, Coupe de France each 0-3) and Sporting Braga (Europa League 0-1) were followed by a 1-1 draw against FC Nantes. However, after that OM celebrated three wins against Athletic Bilbao (H 3: 1, A 2: 1) and Toulouse (A 2: 1), gaining confidence.
However, even without the recent success stories Marseille is already a home night. So the last home defeat is already half a year back. Since then, the Garcia-Elf won 13 out of 17 games at the Stade Vélodrome and even drew against PSG, RB Salzburg and AS Monaco in each draw. Lyon in the current rather mixed Constitution could thus be the first top team in recent months, against which three points are possible.
Lyon:
Olympique Lyon have squandered an excellent starting position in the last six weeks in the fight for one of the three Champions League places and is currently with a record of 15 wins, nine draws and five defeats, a goal difference of 59:34 and 54 points only on the fourth place. Participation in the Europa League seems safe with a lead of nine points to fifth, but the real goal is the premier class. In order to be able to calculate realistic chances here, the team of coach Bruno Génésio has to score on Sunday, in the best case even three times. This could reduce the gap to third place to two points and keep the fight for the premier class open until the end of the season.
As already stated, Lyonnais undergoes turbulent weeks and lost the connection to the leading group around Monaco and Marseille. Most recently it was enough for a 1-1 draw in Ligue 1 against Saint-Etienne and HSC Montpellier and a defeat in the Coupe de France against SM Caen (0: 1), first for two close wins at CSKA Moscow (1: 0) and SM Caen (1-0). However, there was a major setback during the week in the second knockout round of the Europa League against CSKA Moscow. After the narrow victory in Moscow OL retired with a 2: 3 defeat due to the away goals control from the competition.
Especially in the away games of the Ligue 1, the Génésio-Elf presented relatively weak recently and brought only a single victory. So followed on a threesome against Guingamp initially two defeats in Bordeaux and Monaco. In Lille and Montpellier then it was enough to at least two draws. Marseille, however, is yet another caliber in which OL has to stretch powerfully to take something countable.
