Montpellier vs Lille Prediction & Betting tips
A surprise is looming in Ligue 1 this season. After 16 match days, it is not the star ensemble from Paris that is at the top of the table, but the Mastiffs from Lille, who got off to a strong start to the season with 33 points. Last week there was a draw for LOSC in the top game against the Paris heavyweight division, which successfully defended the lead in the table.
During the week, the Great Danes will face the next difficult hurdle. On Wednesday evening, Lille will be visiting the sixth team from Montpellier, who have not had a bad start to the season either. After a temporary high in form, the curve finally showed down again. After all, there was only one win for MHSC in the last four competitive games.
Nevertheless, we would by no means underestimate “La Paillade” on Wednesday evening and see Montpellier vs. Lille odds on a home win are quite value.
Montpellier :
Almost nine years ago, Montpellier HSC became French champions for the first time in the club’s history. Since then, “La Paillade” has lagged behind the great expectations in Ligue 1 and missed the chance of an international starting position year after year. For three years now, a major upheaval has been going on at the football club from Occitania.
Under the current head coach Michel Der Zakarian, who has been in office since May 2017, Montpellier should regain its old strength. In the last season “La Paillade” was still restricted by the end of the season. As the previous start of the 2020/21 season shows, it was possible to build on the performances from the previous season.
After 16 match days, the team of Der Zakarian is in sixth place in the table. The gap to fifth in the table and thus the last starting place for the international competition is only one point.
In the meantime, the form curve at “La Paillade” showed a steep upward trend, after all, four games in a row were won before the home defeat against PSG on the 13th matchday of Ligue 1. In the end, however, this form could no longer be substantiated. In the last four competitive games there was only one win.
Among other things, the home game against FC Metz (0: 2) was lost. For Montpellier it was the fourth home defeat of the current season. With a balance of 4-0-4, there is no sense of optimism in the run-up to the Lille game.
While the offensive made a positive impression in the last few weeks, the defensive game of “La Paillade” could be improved.
Michel Der Zakarian will not have to complain about any losses at the home game against LOSC. Big changes compared to the last starting XI are not expected.
Lille :
The mastiffs from Lille remain leaders in Ligue 1 for the time being. Last week, pole position in the French House of Lords was successfully defended at the summit with PSG. Head coach Christophe Galtier will by no means be satisfied with the division of points, after all, LOSC had numerous chances to bag the home win against the title competitor.
During the week, the away game at Montpellier continues. So far, the mastiffs in Ligue 1 have a record of 9-6-1 with a goal difference of 28:10. This means that Lille has the third strongest offensive and the best defense on the first floor of French football.
As expected, most of the points were booked in the home-grown Stade Pierre-Mauroy. There, Galtier’s team has a record of 6-3-0. Abroad, however, the Great Danes had an away record of 3-3-1, with only one of their last four away games being won.
After a draw at Nice, an away defeat at Brest and an away draw at “ASSE”, they recently won an away win at Dijon. That success should not be praised too highly, after all, the last away opponent of the Great Danes is in the last place in the table in Ligue 1.
In order to master the difficult away hurdle at MHSC, LOSC will have to improve significantly compared to the last away games. Galtier will be able to draw on the full as possible on Wednesday evening, only Renato Sanches has to take a break due to injury. There is still a question mark behind the use of Pied and Araujo.
