Olympiacos Piraeus vs PSV Prediction & Betting tips
Together with Ajax, PSV will try to keep the Dutch honor high in the knockout phase of the Europa League. The Eindhoven team will face the Greek leader Olympiakos in Piraeus on Thursday evening, and will therefore have to work hard to reach the last sixteen.
Olympiacos:
Greek club football probably doesn’t mean much to you, but Olympakos has regularly made a name for itself both within and outside its own borders this season. The red and white are miles ahead of the competition in their own country, and were also present in the group stage of the Champions League in the first half of the season. In a very tough group including Manchester City and FC Porto, the Greeks did not manage to break pots, but they managed to keep the French Olympique Marseille behind them in the nick of time. As a reward, Olympiakos was allowed to spend the winter in the Europa League.
Olympiakos experienced a bad dress rehearsal last weekend, as the loaded derby against Panathinaikos was lost 3-1. However, trainer Pedro Martins already seemed to take PSV at home into account, because Mathieu Valbuena and Jose Holebas, among others, started on the bench. PSV mercenary Bruma was not in the match selection due to an injury, and it seems that he will also have to pass up Thursday evening’s game. Attacker Marios Vrousai, who defended Willem II’s colors last season, does have a good chance of a starting place.
PSV Eindhoven:
At PSV it was a lot less pleasant in recent weeks. The club from Eindhoven was the big loser of last Super January, was knocked out of the cup tournament by Ajax last week, and last weekend again lost expensive points with a 2-2 draw at ADO Den Haag. In all football talk shows trainer Roger Schmidt is under fire, and the players are also struggling with his rather unorthodox substitution policy. Especially with Mohammed Ihattaren and Donyell Malen the frustration is dripping.
A sporting crisis is therefore lurking in the Philips Stadium, because only the Europa League can actually save PSV’s season. Especially the midfield, however, still brings far too little, especially because Mario Götze and Cody Gakpo are still not fit. One of the few players who – if he is allowed to play – manages to escape the malaise is Donyell Malen. The striker already has seven European goals to his name, chasing the club record of Willy van der Kuijlen and Gerrie Deijkers, who scored eight European goals in the 1974-1975 and 1977-1978 seasons respectively. Malen is also only one goal away from his fiftieth goal in the service of PSV.
