Poland vs Latvia Prediction & Betting tips
In Warsaw, Poland will face Latvia in a European Championship qualifying match on Sunday evening. Last Thursday, Poland beat Austria 0-1, while Latvia lost 3-1 in the first qualifying match for EURO 2020 to Macedonia.
Poland:
Poland was in the Nations League last year in the highest possible group. That meant that the Eastern Europeans were in a group with two difficult opponents. In practice, that turned out to be the case: Poland took only two points in the group with Portugal and Italy and therefore relegated to the Nations League. The away games in both Portugal and Italy ended in a 1-1 draw for the men of national coach Jerzy Brzęczek. However, Poland did not do it at home, so the country will have to qualify for next year’s European Championship through the normal qualifying series.
Together with Austria, Poland is the big favorite to win group G. In addition to those two countries, Israel, Slovenia, Macedonia and Latvia are also active in group G. In short: it is certainly not easy for Poland to secure qualification because Austria, Slovenia and Israel are formidable competitors. On Thursday evening, Poland took a first step towards qualifying, as Austria was defeated 0-1 in the Alphen by a goal from AC Milan-striker Krzysztof Piątek. On Sunday, the home game with Latvia will follow and the Brzęczek team will normally have to book the second victory of this qualifying series.
Latvia:
Of course, Latvia is a strange duck in the football landscape. In 2004, the Latvians managed to qualify strikingly for the European Championship in Portugal. For the rest, Latvia’s football history is not very significant. The Letten were – logically – in the lowest possible group during the Nations League. In that Nations League, Latvia finished third behind Georgia and Kazakhstan, while Latvia remained above Andorra based on the goal difference. The team of former national coach Mika-Matti Paatelainen, who was relieved by Slaviša Stojanovič, took a total of four points in the Nations League and that was due to four draws. In the current European Championship qualifying group, Latvia will sign for four points, as the number 132 of the FIFA world ranking is the best candidate to finish last.
This is partly because Latvia lost to Macedonia on Thursday evening. In Southern Europe, the Latvians fell 3-1 and that does not bode well for Sunday’s game against Poland. The Poles are still a few classes better than the Macedonians and for Latvia it will be stopped mainly in Warsaw. Against Macedonia, Cambuur’s Andrejs Cigaņiks was sent off with two yellow cards and the 21-year-old midfielder had to let go of the game with Poland. For the rest, Latvia has few players that ring a bell – the majority of the Latvians are still playing in their own competition and that is not very likely.
