Sevilla vs Ath Bilbao Prediction & Betting tips
We have the Christmas turkey and the oliebollen again, so now it’s time for … ¡fútbol! In Spain, the squatter between Seville and Athletic Bilbao is scheduled for Friday night in Sanchez Pizjuan. A key duel in the battle for European football!
Seville:
Seville can look back on an excellent first half of the season. After the thorough renovation last summer, with Julen Lopetegui as the new coach and a cartload of new players, I expected that the Andalusians would be confronted with start-up problems. However, nothing could be further from the truth, with third place and only five points behind league-leader FC Barcelona, Seville is a dangerous outsider for winning the Spanish national title.
The strong season of Seville is mainly due to the solid rearguard. The red and white have already played 25 matches in all competitions, and in no fewer than thirteen of them they managed to keep their goal clean. However, I am a lot less enthusiastic about the vanguard, because with only 23 goals in eighteen league matches, Sevilla does not get any further in terms of scoring power than the right-hand row. Two new center strikers were presented this summer with Luuk de Jong and Javier Hernandez, but they have not yet been able to convince at the Sanchez Pizjuan. The Lopetegui team also takes a relatively large number of cards. Sergio Reguilon was suspended on Friday evening, while no fewer than four players were in the lead with Diego Carlos, Ever Banega, Joan Jordan and Lucas Ocampos. Midfielder Fernando is not on the alert, but with no fewer than eight yellow cards he is La Liga’s second largest card packer.
Athletic Bilbao:
The players and fans of Athletic Bilbao have also had a wonderful New Year’s Eve. It is hard to imagine now, but around this time last year the Basques had to fear acute degradation. Trainer Gaizka Garitano managed to bring Los Leones back to life. Under his leadership, 2019 turned into a golden year, in which no less than 65 points were won. Only FC Barcelona (89 points), Real Madrid (76), Atletico Madrid (74) and Valencia (67) did even better last year.
Athletic Bilbao, however, is typically a team that has to cope with its home games. In their own San Mames, the Basques lost only one league game over the whole of 2019, but so far this season they only won one away game (Osasuna-out: 1-2). Garitano also has some personnel problems. Important players such as Iker Muniain and Oscar de Marcos are in the rag basket, while Aritz Aduriz is also not fit. That is why it becomes puzzling, especially in the center in the front, also because Inaki Williams does better justice on the flanks. In previous games, Kenan Kodro was therefore allowed to try as a center striker, but he is actually short for this level. Perhaps that is why routine Raul Garcia starts Friday evening at the tip of the attack, but that too is really just an emergency solution.
