Slovenia vs Greece Prediction & Betting tips
In group C3 of the UEFA Nations League, the Greece of national coach John van ‘t Schip will visit the Slovenia of top goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Both countries have something to put right, as they both failed to qualify for next year’s European Championship.
Slovenia:
Slovenia made itself heard regularly in the first decade of the 21st century with a European Championship participation and two World Cup participations, but in recent years it has been very quiet around the current number 64 in the FIFA world rankings. During the last European Championship qualifying series, the country had to put up with Poland, Austria and even the weak North Macedonia, so it was unable to qualify for the European Championship in 2021. The Slovenes also knew in the first edition of the Nations League with three draws and three losses don’t break any pots.
Slovenia will have to take a different approach from now on, although national coach Matjas Kek will have to improvise a lot on Thursday evening. Top keeper Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid) is present, but many other big names are absent for various reasons. Well-known players such as Josip Ilicic (Atalanta), Benjamin Verbic (Dynamo Kiev), Tim Matavz (Al-Wahda), Bojan Jokic (Ufa) and Robert Beric (Chicago Fire) are all not included. Especially in midfield and on attack, Kek has to puzzle, because only four of the thirteen called up players in the front lines have more than three international matches to their name.
Greece:
Greece staged one of the biggest stunts in international football in 2004 by crowning itself the European champions in the final at the expense of host country Portugal, but since then we haven’t heard much from the Southern Europeans. The blue and white missed both the last European Championship and the last World Cup, and will also have to follow next year’s European Championship behind the tube.
Dutch coach John van ‘t Schip may now try to revive the Greek national team. With a 1-0 defeat to Finland and a 1-1 draw against Liechtenstein, Van ‘t Schip initially started his new adventure dramatically, but thanks to three consecutive victories against Bosnia-Herzegovina (2-1), Armenia (0-1) respectively and Finland (2-1) he is still a bit firmer in the saddle. With talents such as Vangelis Pavlidis (Willem II) and Kostas Tsimikas (Liverpool), the Greek future looks brighter again, although the country still has a long way to go.
