Southampton vs Derby Prediction & Betting tips
The first game between Derby and Southampton in the FA Cup ended in a 2-2 draw. That is why there is a replay on the program at St. Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Southampton:
At Southampton they are obliged to take the next round of FA Cup at the expense of Derby County. In it, then, Accrington Stanley waits and if The Saints win Derby County on Wednesday-evening, they are already one leg in the eighth finals of the FA Cup. In the first game between Southampton and Derby County, it did not seem likely that a replay would be played at all. Nathan Redmond had already put The Saints in the lead after four minutes and made it 0-2 just after halftime. However, in the last 32 minutes, goalkeeper Angus Gunn had to fish twice more, which meant that both teams will be back on track this week.
The Saints refueled last weekend. In the Premier League, Southampton has a tough time this season and there was also little expectation from the team when it had to visit Leicester City. Southampton had not won the last three league matches, but booked an excellent result in the King Power Stadium: 1-2. At halftime, Southampton led 0-2 by goals from James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long, but The Saints were in the 58th minute still a counterweight. Incidentally, Yann Valery got two yellow cards and he misses the FA Cup-meeting with Derby County. In addition, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Charlie Austin are also suspended. Maya Yoshida is active on the Asian Cup with Japan and must also ignore this happening. As if that is not enough, Ralph Hasenhüttl also has to miss four players due to injuries. So the Austrian coach has to do some nice puzzling in order to come to a decent team.
Derby County:
For Southampton, the Premier League is more important than the FA Cup and the same applies to Derby County: The Rams are still in the Championship for promotion and that is where Frank Lampard and his men are. On the second level of England, Derby County is in sixth place. At the end of the ride that would mean play-offs, and of course The Rams will sign up for that. Lampard’s men already have three points less than number five Middlesbrough, but the gap at number seven Bristol City is also two points.
The last game that Derby County played was lost. On Friday-evening, the game was scheduled by league-leader Leeds United and The Rams went down 2-0 on Elland Road. Incidentally, it was hardly about the game itself afterwards. Especially Leeds United coach Marcelo Bielsa had to pay the most for Frank Lampard, who found it unfair that his colleague had sent a ‘spy’ to the training of The Rams. Lampard obviously has a point here. Yet 106-times international did not want to use the incident as an excuse for the loss of The Rams.
