Sporting vs FC Porto Prediction & Betting tips
Finalists wanted – this week the semi-finals of the Portuguese league cup, the Taca de Liga, are on the program. The fans in Portugal can look forward to two absolute delicacies, because the four best club teams of recent years are in the semi-finals. The first semi-final will be played on Tuesday evening between Sporting Lisbon and Porto.
The Taca de Liga is a relatively young competition that was held for the first time in 2007/08, with seven successes Benfica Lisbon is the most successful representative. The green lions from Lisbon won the title in 2018 and 2019, while the dragons from Porto have celebrated countless successes in recent years, but a triumph in the league cup is not one of them.
In the last two years Porto have been narrowly beaten in the final, but qualifying for the final again at the Estadio Jose Alvalade will not be an easy task. The best bookmakers expect an even game and at Sporting Lisbon against Porto the odds offered for a win are almost identical. The game starts on Tuesday evening at 19:45 p.m.
Sporting Lisbon :
The performance at national level is very important for Sporting head coach Ruben Amorim, because after the bitter elimination in qualifying for the UEFA Europa League against LASK, the green lions can only prove themselves at national level. The shock at the beginning of the season has long been forgotten, because without the double burden, things are going according to plan for the 18-time champion. Sporting Lisbon has been leading the current table of the Liga NOS since the sixth matchday.
14 league games have been played in Portugal so far, eleven of which the league leaders won, three times the Amorim-Elf had to be content with a draw. This means that Sporting Lisbon is currently four points ahead of their two rivals Benfica Lisbon and FC Porto. In particular, the defense is the showpiece, because goalkeeper Antonio Adan (came from Atletico Madrid in the summer) had only nine goals conceded and was able to keep his box clean in seven of the 14 games.
But the offensive also knows how to convince and behind FC Porto (36 goals) Sporting Lisbon has the second best offensive with 31 goals. Pedro Goncalves stands out in particular, the 22-year-old midfielder (center, left) has already scored twelve goals this season and is clearly the top scorer in Portugal (five goals ahead). The two teams have scored at least once in all 14 league games.
Last week in Portugal the round of 16 of the “big” cup competition was on the program. Sporting Lisbon suffered their first defeat of the season on the national stage and received a 2-0 defeat against CS Maritimo Funchal on Madeira. The large-scale rotation ensured that the automatisms did not work and Sporting Lisbon could not create any danger for the entire duration of the game.
Sporting Lisbon will not start with the best line-up on Tuesday, but the starting line-up will have far more regular player potential than last week. After all, the finals beckon and games like the one against Porto are of enormous importance. However, there are some injuries-related absences to cope with. The two strikers Andraz Sporar and Luiz Phellype will not be available, as will top talent Nuno Mendes (who is associated with SSC Napoli).
FC Porto:
While Sporting Lisbon experienced a disappointment on the international stage, things went outstandingly for the champions from Porto. After a 1: 3 defeat in their first game against Manchester City, Porto were able to play to zero in the following five games in the Champions League group stage and confidently made it into the round of 16 with four wins and one draw. The Conceicao-Elf will meet the Italian champions Juventus Turin in mid-February / early March.
Nationally, on the other hand, things did not go according to plan at the start of the season and Porto only won three of the first six league games. After that, however, the team found their way back on track and celebrated seven league wins in a row. Due to the constant performance of Sporting Lisbon, the gap to the leaders could not really be reduced. When Sporting failed against Rio Ave (1-1) at the start of the 14th matchday last weekend, neither Porto nor Benfica could take advantage of this slip.
In the direct duel, the “O Classico” in Portugal, the two championship contenders parted with a 1-1 draw and are thus still four points behind the green lions. For Porto, the division of points meant the first loss of points in the domestic championship since October 30th. There should be no lack of self-confidence after the recent games. Despite the guest role, in the league cup semifinals between Sporting Lisbon and Porto only slightly higher odds are offered for the championship tip than for the home win. In terms of quality, Porto is probably a tad higher than Sporting.
Internationally, Porto shone in the group phase with a very strong defense, the Conceicao-Elf has so far completely owed this proof on the national stage. Over the past four years, Porto have conceded between 18 and 22 goals throughout the season (34 games). The Argentine goalkeeper Augustin Marchesin has currently had to hit 17 times (!) In 14 games.
