St Etienne vs Angers Prediction & Betting tips
In the French Ligue 1, the 14th matchday of the current 2020/21 season is on the program on the third weekend of Advent. This will be opened by the record champions with the game between St. Etienne and Angers. The green-whites from the industrial city are still the most successful club in France with ten titles, but PSG can catch up with “ASSE” this year.
Instead of dreaming of the title, Saint-Etienne has been orienting itself more towards relegation battle in recent weeks. The latest development is worrying and, given the results, it is almost surprising that the best bookmakers between St. Etienne and Angers are offering slightly lower odds on the home win.
Angers celebrated three wins in the last four league games and has thus established itself in the extended top of Ligue 1. With a win on Friday evening, the Moulin team would even climb to fourth place. The game at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard starts on Friday at 20:00 p.m.
St. Etienne :
Under Christophe Galtier and Jean-Louis Gasset, the ten-time French champions finished eight times in a row in the top eight in Ligue 1 and were also regularly represented in the Europa League. After fourth place under Gasset, however, they parted ways and the downward trend began last year. At the time of the cancellation, Saint-Etienne was to be found directly above the ominous line and probably by no means unhappy about the premature end of the season.
The team of head coach Claude Puel apparently made the best use of the long break and started the new season brilliantly. Thanks to three opening wins, there was a euphoria and the supporters of the green-whites were in good spirits to experience a satisfactory 2020/21 season.
Any euphoria has long since vanished, because the Puel-Elf has not won a game since the 2-0 win on matchday three against Racing Strasbourg. For no less than ten league games (three draws, seven defeats), the club has been waiting for a complete success. Due to the negative run, ASSE was passed through to 15th place in the table. Claude Puel has now been counted and with each further setback, an early separation becomes more likely.
On the fourth matchday, ASSE lost points for the first time in a 2-2 draw against FC Nantes. The season goals seven and eight were scored, since then the Puel-Elf has only scored four more goals in nine league games.
After the failed transfer of Mbaye Niang and the poor goal yield, the storm problem cannot be denied. A peat festival is hardly to be expected, so between St. Etienne and Angers a tip of under 2.5 is definitely a good idea.
Angers:
Since returning to the French Ligue 1, the black and whites have developed into a middle class in French football, there have never been relegation worries at Angers in recent years. Head coach Stephane Moulin is primarily responsible for the success of the last decade. The former coach of the B team was promoted to head coach in the summer of 2011 and hopes to celebrate his tenth anniversary next year.
Last season Angers finished in tenth place at the time of the cancellation and thus achieved the second-best result since the Ligue 1 return. This season the philosophy has completely changed, because the Moulin-Elf is much more offensive.
28 goals were scored in 28 league games in 2019/20, after 13 league games in the new season, the team has already scored an impressive 20 goals. If the 22 goals conceded are added up, an average of 3.23 goals per game has been scored so far. The away games in particular (26 goals in six games) were a guarantee for goal festivals.
After 13 match days, Angers has a 7-1-5 record and is currently in seventh place in the table. Especially in the last few weeks, the Moulin-Elf shone and won three of the last four league games. Only against top club Olympique Lyon did the underdog suffer a narrow 0: 1 defeat.
In general, Angers is surprisingly strong, especially abroad. Against HSC Montpellier (1: 4) and PSG (1: 6) there were significant defeats, but the four other away games were all won. With currently four away wins, Angers has already celebrated more victories abroad than last season.
