Tottenham vs Chelsea Prediction & Betting tips
The 61st edition of the English League Cup – now referred to as the EFL Cup – will be completed in rapid succession. This week, the round of 16 games are on the program before the competition takes a short break and the quarter-finals are not played until the fourth weekend in Advent. The big hit in the second round is the explosive London city derby between Tottenham and Chelsea on the new White Hart Lane.
In the recent past there have been some sensations in the league cup, many top teams had to give up prematurely. This is not the case this season, however, as 13 of the 16 remaining teams come from the English Premier League.
Although the Spurs enjoy home rights and can stand up to the Blues in terms of quality, the betting base odds comparison shows that the tip on the guests is clearly favored between Tottenham and Chelsea. A wrong assessment by the bookmakers? Or are there reasons for being a clear favorite?
Tottenham:
The derby against the Blues will be Tottenham’s first appearance in the 2020/21 League Cup. The third round match against fourth division Leyton Orient was postponed a few hours before kick-off because the underdog had several positive tests. On Friday, the English Football Association decided that the game would not be rescheduled, but that Spurs would advance to the round of 16 without a fight.
The canceled game will definitely have been received with goodwill by the Spurs. After all, an absolute mammoth program awaits the Mourinho-Elf before the second international break. Thursday still in action in the Macedonian capital Skopje, Sunday Premier League home game against Newcastle, now on Tuesday the explosive derby, before the decisive Europa League play-off home game against Maccabi Haifa is on the program shortly afterwards.
Last but not least, the Spurs will be guest at Mourinho’s ex-club Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday. This makes five – some extremely important – games in just nine days. Rotation is absolutely necessary in order to be able to dance reasonably successfully at all weddings.
The Mourinho team suffered the second setback in the domestic championship at the weekend. In the second home game there was again no victory. After the 1-0 defeat at the beginning of the season against Everton, Tottenham looked like the winner against Newcastle United for a long time, but a handball by Eric Dier ensured the flattering Magpies equalizer from the penalty spot in minutes 90 + 7.
The home strength of the past season (12-3-4) is currently not visible. In addition, the tiredness became noticeable as the game continued. Mourinho will have to rotate despite the derby and a prognosis for the home side between Tottenham and Chelsea does not seem realistic.
Chelsea:
The Blues are undoubtedly the transfer king in summer 2020. After the transfer ban expired, the club went on a shopping spree. In the first year of Lampard, the expectations were still very low and yet the Blues reached the Champions League.
With Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell or Hakim Ziyech, one can no longer speak of low expectations. The Blues want and have to play for the title. In this respect, the start of the new season can be described as sobering.
After three matchdays, Chelsea only have four points on the credit side. A show of strength was needed last weekend to avoid the second defeat of the season. At promoted West Bromwich Albion, Chelsea were already 3-0 down after an inferior first half. Chelsea increased significantly in the second half and a last-minute goal from Tammy Abraham (90 + 3) secured the point.
In contrast to the Spurs, Chelsea were already in action in the EFL Cup last Wednesday and delivered a real gala performance against second division club Barnsley. Despite rotation, the Blues played big and were able to prevail with 6-0.
New goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will make his debut at White Hart Lane, and Hakim Ziyech could also get the first few minutes in the Chelsea jersey. All in all, the squad has grown enormously in breadth after the transfer offensive and is therefore a great advantage over Tottenham.
The longer break (Chelsea was in action on Saturday) also speaks for the guests. The role of favorites between Tottenham and Chelsea according to current odds in favor of the guests is understandable.
