Twente vs Groningen Prediction & Betting tips
The 2020/21 season in the Dutch Eredivisie is two game days young. Both FC Twente Enschede and FC Groningen came out of the starting blocks quite well. Both of them were already able to get their first three and now of course would like to improve.
In the run-up to the match between Twente and Groningen, the bookmakers’ odds only narrowly move towards the home side, as the odds comparison of the betting base shows. A correspondingly tight lot can therefore be assumed.
The good results in the preparation for the season and the fact that they remained unbeaten in their first two league games and now enjoy the home advantage speak for the men from the east of the Netherlands. However, the Reds could not win a single of their last three home games against FCG, which should also be taken into account in the forecast for Twente against Groningen.
Twente:
FC Twente Enschede was able to celebrate the Dutch championship as early as 1926 and was last in second place in the final table of the Eredivisie in the 2010/11 season.
Another championship was also celebrated a little more than a year ago in summer 2019. In this case, however, in the second highest Dutch league, to which the Reds had been relegated the year before. Because of the direct resurgence, the traditional club was spared the fall into insignificance.
However, it must also be stated that the termination of the 2019/20 season definitely played into the cards for the eastern Dutch. After all, not only was no champion crowned in Holland, but there were also neither promoters nor relegators.
Thus, the FC Twente stayed in, which could only win seven of its 26 league games and had a single point ahead of a direct relegation zone. So it could have been very close again on the final eight match days.
All the greater was the endeavor of the Reds on the transfer market to push the re-establishment in the Eredivisie further. The team of Ron Jans was mainly made up with loan players, but among them are Danilo from Ajax Amsterdam or Vaclav Cerny from FC Utrecht, who both scored their first league goals for Enschede and immediately helped the team.
Against the background that the East Dutch did not lose a single one of their four test matches in the run-up to the season and scored a respectable four points from the duels with Fortuna Sittard and Feyenoord, it makes perfect sense that the bookmakers’ odds are slightly in the direction of Twente against Groningen turn down the red.
Groningen:
FC Groningen was not founded until 1971, with prominent players such as Luis Suárez, Daley Blind, Virgil van Dijk and Ronald Koeman already under contract. Arjen Robben was once trained by the self-proclaimed pride of the north of the Netherlands and surprisingly returned to his youth club for the 2020/21 season.
The former Bayern star even wears the captain’s armband for the green and whites, but cannot lead his team to victory in Enschede. The 36-year-old is currently absent due to a groin injury.
The FCG already proved in 2015 that it can be done without the superstar Robben, when the KNVB Cup was won. It is the only big title so far in the history of the Groningen, who at the end of the canceled 2019/20 season were once again where they are mostly: in the no man’s land of the Eredivisie in ninth place.
After all, the green-whites have been part of the top Dutch league for 21 years. Since then, however, there has never been more than fifth place in the final table. Even now, Danny Buijs’ men are only ninth after one win and one defeat at the start of the season.
All the more annoying are the current unrest around the team. Ajdin Hrustic wants to leave the green-whites and is already in agreement with Eintracht Frankfurt. Because the club’s management blocked the move because of a disagreement about the amount of the transfer fee, the player recently went on the offensive on Instagram.
It would certainly be another painful exit for the northern Dutch, who have already had to let go of three top performers: Deyovaisio Zeefuik, Mike te Wierik and Tom van de Looi. In terms of sport, FCG still has a lot to throw in the balance, but the unrest and Robben’s injury stand in the way of Twente’s victory against Groningen for an away win in the east of the country.
