Valencia vs Ajax Prediction & Betting tips
Ajax will be looking for its second Champions League victory of the season on Wednesday-evening, when the team visits the Spanish subtopper Valencia. There is, however, a grim atmosphere at the Mestalla at the moment, as the Valencia fans disagree entirely with the way in which their favorite club operates.
Valencia:
Valencia is at the start of a new era, after the surprising resignation of trainer Marcelino a few weeks ago. The coach enjoyed a great deal of prestige both in the dressing room and in the supporters, but due to a disagreement with chairman Peter Lim, he still had to pack his bags. The inexperienced Albert Celades now holds the reins at the club from the orange city.
In any case, Celades does not opt for the easy way, because with no fewer than six different trainers in the space of just two years, Mestalla has turned out to be a real trainers graveyard in recent years. In addition, Valencia and Marcelino with twice Champions League qualification and winning the Copa del Rey last season had finally found the right man. It is virtually impossible for Celades to match that performance, also because the fans and various club icons still see him as a traitor. It is therefore no coincidence in my view that Valencia has done better since his arrival outside the home than in his own Mestalla. On foreign soil, Valencia already beat Chelsea and Athletic Bilbao under Celades (twice with 0-1), but in both home games against Leganes and Getafe respectively, Los Che did not get further than a draw. Also on Wednesday evening I expect a tense atmosphere in the stands, with protests and chants against President Lim.
Ajax:
Since its formidable performance last year, Ajax has once again been among the absolute protagonists on the global football scene. The team from Amsterdam went a miss after the Champions League final, but if it were up to the true gourmets, Ajax had earned the audience prize. Expectations are also high this season, and people want to overwinter again in the European champions ball in the Johan Cruijff Arena.
The 3-0 home win over Lille two weeks ago was a great start, although Ajax looks less strong this season than last year. The build-up is a lot smoother and Ajax is giving away more chances, which is of course due to the summer departure of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt – two clappers that you can’t just replace. In that respect trainer Erik ten Hag will be delighted with the return of all-rounder Donny van de Beek, who can nicely take over the place of Edson Alvarez. Van de Beek plays football much easier than Alvarez, who often delayed the build-up in Amsterdam too much.
