Villarreal vs Girona Prediction & Betting tips
Villarreal will be giving Girona a visit on Saturday afternoon in the hotel’s own Ceramica. A key game in the fight for European football, as both teams are part of the Spanish sub-top.
Villarreal :
With just one victory from the last seven rounds, Villarreal is currently in a free fall. The yellow shirts were initially a major candidate for Champions League football, but now they have to be careful that they do not let Europa League qualifying slip. Last Wednesday, the team again disappointed in the 1-0 lost away match against direct competitor Eibar. ‘This way it will be very difficult to place ourselves for European football,’ said trainer Javi Calleja. However, he himself did not go free by leaving players like Samu Castillejo, Pablo Fornals, Manuel Trigueros and Carlos Bacca outside the basic eleven. Calleja: ‘They already have so many minutes in their legs. I thought that the team would benefit from some fresh forces. ‘ Without these four key players, however, Villarreal had nothing to crumble in the Ipurua. In particular Enes Ünal was another parody of an attacker. At FC Twente he had a great year’s run last season, but in Spain the Turk does not play anything at all.
This Saturday, however, Calleja seems to fall back on the usual names. Especially Bacca has been absolutely indispensable for this team since the winter break of top striker Cedric Bakambu. Also the defense has recently not been in top form with only one clean sheet in nine official matches. The only time that goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo in that series managed to keep his goal clean was last week at home against Getafe (1-0 win), although he had to stop two penalties.
Girona:
One of the teams that Villarreal could soon get away from sixth place is Girona. The Catalan PhD student is working on a fantastic debut year in La Liga and remains a major candidate for European football thanks to a handsome 1-0 victory over Celta de Vigo. The defense once again stood like a house and with Christian Stuani and Cristian Portu the red-witted have two perilous attackers. ‘We are doing well, but now it is mainly a question of staying firmly on both feet on the ground and continuing to work hard,’ says trainer Pablo Machin. ‘That is the only way to bring about European football.’
With five home wins in a row, Girona is now the club with the most home wins in a row in La Liga. The Catalonians, however, have a lot harder to do, because in 2018 they did not win a single game with four defeats and two draws outside of their own Montilivi. On a visit to Villarreal, the redwarks hope to bring change there under the leadership of Portu. The attacker is emphatically followed by Spain-national coach Julen Lopetegui, who already sat in front of him on Tuesday night in the Montilivi. In its current form, Portu would certainly not be out of place in the selection of La Roja.
