Vitebsk vs Brest Prediction & Betting tips
The fans in the Belarusian Vysshaya League are slowly but surely familiar with the lack of alternatives for football fans. The all-year championship started just a few weeks ago and this weekend is the fifth game day.
One realization from the first few weeks is that almost all teams act at eye level and there are accordingly balanced games to be seen. One of the two top games this weekend is the duel between Vitebsk and champions Dinamo Brest, which we will address in this article.
Both teams collected seven of twelve possible points in the first four rounds and are thus within striking distance of the top of the table. Nevertheless, the two teams usually move in completely different spheres.
Vitebsk secured relegation only on the last matchday of last season, while Dinamo Brest fixed the surprising title win. In the betting base odds comparison it can also be seen that between Vitebsk and Dinamo Brest the guests are regarded as the clear favorite according to current odds. The game starts on Saturday afternoon at 16 p.m.
The hosts from Vitebsk ended the year 2018 in fourth place and were allowed to try their hand in the Europa League qualification in summer 2019. The past calendar year, however, was anything but as desired and after fourth place there was a long risk of relegation to the second tier. The direct descent (two points ahead) as well as the relegation (one point ahead) could only be prevented very thinly.
The past calendar year ended with just one point from the last five games and a total of four defeats in a row. Despite this negative run, the club management was not forced to act and continues to trust long-term coach Sergey Yasinski. The 55-year-old worked in various functions at the club from 2001 to 2005 before returning in summer 2015.
This continuity now seems to be paying off. In the first four games, the club scored seven out of twelve possible points. This is all the more satisfactory given that the 1998 cup winner (greatest success in club history) played three of the first four games abroad.
At first glance, three away games are not a lucky draw, but on closer inspection Vitebsk cannot complain. FK Gorodeya, opponent on matchday one, was the best opponent so far as last season’s table seventh. The home game against the master is now a first real endurance test. Although both teams have seven points, the guests between Vitebsk and Dinamo Brest are to be seen as the clear favorite according to current odds.
BATE Borissov was number one in Belarusian football for 13 years. This dominance was surprisingly broken last season. With 23 wins, six draws and just one loss, head coach Marcel Licka’s team collected 75 points and was five points ahead of BATE Borissov.
The successor was found quickly, after all, 46-year-old Sergey Kovalchuk is a true club legend. He spent nine years at Brest as an active player before he was immediately promoted to the coaching team and has worked in various functions almost continuously since 2005. He was head coach between 2013 and 2016.
In his second term as head coach, Brest has played eight games so far and looks back on a 5-2-1 record. In addition to winning the Supercup (2-0 against Soligorsk), the master also reached the semi-finals in the cup competition. In the domestic championship, on the other hand, the start was a bit bumpy with two wins, a draw and a defeat. The strong offensive of the past season (70 goals) is still suffering from an inhibition of loading.
What is striking when you take a closer look at the statistics is the fact that Dinamo Brest feels extremely comfortable in someone else’s place. The only defeat last season was in front of a home crowd and the first defeat in 2020 was to be coped with at home. Conversely, this means that Dinamo Brest has not lost an away game since November 9, 2018.
Last weekend Brest celebrated their first home win of the current season despite a 0-1 deficit against Isloch and showed morale. The self-confidence of this success as well as the very strong away statistics and the significantly higher quality are strong arguments that suggest a prognosis in favor of the guests on Saturday afternoon between Vitebsk and Dinamo Brest.
