Wigan vs Nottingham Prediction & Betting tips
Two promising teams face each other in the DW Stadium. Wigan does not seem to accept a relegation battle and Nottingham Forest wants to reach the playoffs at all costs. It is not very convincing yet at Forest, but as early in the season everything can change. Who wins in Wigan?
Wigan Athletic:
The last big news about Wigan Athletic in the last years was the final place in the FA Cup in the 2012-13 season. In the end, Arsenal was too strong for The Latics after penalties. The following years Wigan appears to be remarkably weak in cup matches, especially in the battle for the Carabao Cup (previously EFL Cup). Since the 2014-15 season Wigan only managed to reach the second round of this cup tournament once. Last year, Blackpool was beaten 2-1 in the first round, but the tournament ended less than two weeks later with a hard 4-1 defeat at Aston Villa.
Also this year, the adventure of the Paul Cook team immediately stops in the Carabao Cup. Rotherham United was drawn in the first round. The co-PhD student appeared to be less than Wigan on paper and so a result seemed feasible, but it soon became clear that Rotherham would take the profit. The home team was significantly better playing football and that resulted in a 3-1 victory. Despite the fact that both teams played with a strongly modified basic eleven, it is remarkable that Wigan was defeated so easily by The Millers. Because of the defeat, the focus can now be completely on the Championship (and the FA Cup).
Nottingham:
In the early season, Nottingham Forest has already played four matches. The team of Aitor Karanka is already on three league matches and since this week also on one cup match. None of these games was lost. A side note here is that three matches (in regular time) ended in a draw. Against Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Bury FC, 1-1 was played. The last game was played for the Carabao Cup and was nevertheless won after penalties.
It is at all pretty clever to say that Forest is still in the battle for the Carabao Cup. For a long time, four-divisioner Bury was on a 0-1 lead over City Ground. After half an hour, a completely changed basic eleven from Forest had to go even further with ten men after a red card from keeper Jordan Smith. With deadline day-mercenary Sam Byram of West Ham United in the ranks, it finally succeeded in enforcing penalties against the majority of Bury. Matty Cash shot the equalizer on the scoreboard in the 93rd minute and thus penalties had to be taken (new line in the Carabao Cup). 21 penalties later, Forest only made it to the longest end and so the Karanka team also participated in the Carabao Cup in the second round.
